When I was a kid, Sundays were devoted to our small family.
My younger brother and me, and three adults… My Mum. My Dad. And my paternal grandmother.
Each one with our unique tastes, levels of patience, and personal interests.
We sat around the family table and shared a typically-French 3-hour lunch, punctuated by lively conversations between the 3 adults.
WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THIS
Although small, this little group had VERY different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds…
Religious beliefs and political leanings that were only ever hinted at…
And VERY different outlooks on how the world “should work” – form daily life, to work, health, or money.
So these topics were almost never talked about.
There was no list of conversations to avoid, it was merely implied. Yet, from time to time, one of the adults would let their unique views slip.
And I grew up as “the guy in the middle” who got to see validity and value in each person’s perspective.
HOW OTHERS SEE THE WORLD
I suppose it makes sense that I’m endlessly interested in observing and understanding how people see the world.
It seems to be what I’m naturally wired for…
I’m a connector.
The guy who can translate people’s extremely different outlooks to each other…
And see the natural connections or untapped cohesion they can’t see or articulate.
“HIDDEN” NATURAL FLOW
I believe that in most situations, there’s natural coherence – a way in which things can “work” naturally. In teams. In families. In business interests… A “natural flow” of sorts, that’s rewarding and enriching to all involved.
But we, human beings, are good at blinding ourselves to them. Because we get attached to explanations that are overly complicated… Overly simplified… Or to binary narratives such as “who’s right/who’s wrong” or “who wins/who loses.”
UNTAPPED VALUE
I guess seeing these hidden ‘natural flows’ is what I do all day… When I read random arguments online, scrutinize people’s behaviour at the grocery store, ponder investment opportunities, or stroll around the city aimlessly… I want to see the world through many different lenses and vantage points – and explore where untapped value hides.
I envision how things could be… Zooming in and zooming out… To see what’s beyond the immediately-visible… In terms of time horizons, strategies, emotions, self-protection, biases, probabilities, etc…
Then I can decide what’s worth investing time, money, energy – and sanity – into…
SEEING POTENTIAL IN CHAOS
Although I could technically be considered an independent investor and entrepreneur, I am not on the look-out for investment opportunities. And I don’t have a formal consulting offering (yet?).
But maybe you feel that I can bring you a lens that’s helpful to your work. I often see ‘natural coherence’ where most see chaos. And ‘hidden potential’ where most see conflict or drama.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO UNTANGLE?
Do note that the only certainty I have is that I don’t have any shortcuts, surefire answers, or expert opinions. All I guarantee if we work together… Is that I’ll show up… Listen fully…. Push you to explore a little deeper…
And strive to help you untangle what’s in the way of seeing “natural coherence” in your life and work.
